Brenda – Wedding
My name is Brenda and I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in August 2012. My initial treatment was supposed to last 2 years and 4 months. About 2 weeks before my treatment was supposed to be over I had a relapse on December 2014, but this relapse was different than my original diagnosis. My cancer had come back, but in my Central Nervous System or in simple terms it came back in my spinal fluid and the fluid around my brain. A CNS Relapse is what it’s called. I had the option of returning to chemotherapy with radiation added or to go with a transplant. At the time the benefits did not outweigh the risk of the operation and we chose to go with chemotherapy and radiation. June 2016 I had relapsed once again. Another CNS relapse and this time I had no choice. I needed a bone marrow transplant. I did my bone marrow transplant in November 2016. This past April 2017, I had another CNS relapse and my options at that point were narrowed down. My doctor sent out applications to get me into trials for T-Cell immunotherapy. 2 weeks later we found out I didn’t qualify for any of the T-Cell trials except for the one in Philadelphia. After some discord and arguments with insurance they finally approved me to go to the trial. I have had cancer for 5 years now. Never once did I ever finish a treatment. This has been a huge financial burden to my family. I also had put a strain on them just before my transplant to see if I could freeze my eggs before it was too late. The fertility doctor said that I might not be able to save any seeing as I had done treatment twice before. My fiancee and I took the risk regardless because we had lost a baby at 2 months while I was in a maintenance phase of treatment. Unfortunately we only were able to save one egg. Now my T-cell immunotherapy treatment requires me to fly to Philadelphia every three months, putting my parents on another financial strain. This is why I would like to ask for a grant. My fiancee and I would like to get married and the cost of a wedding is going to be hard for them while they’re trying to pay bills, groceries, gas and save up for my trips to Philadelphia. It doesn’t have to be much, but a little something goes a long way. The grant can be used for catering services or photography and video, even a DJ. Thank You.
